Invertebrates

Healthy river water is teeming with river fly larvae (the juvenile stages of invertebrates). They are vital for a healthy river food chain. Although we don’t often see the ‘wigglies’ in the river, invertebrates are one of the single biggest indicators of the general health of a river – a wide range of species, as well as a lot of them, indicates a healthy river system. Alongside our volunteers, we survey and monitor invertebrates – a sudden drop in their numbers or changes in species may indicate a problem.
