Sewage Treatment discharge
On average, domestic water usage in the catchment requires 118 400 000 litres of water to be treated and ultimately discharged back into our water system every day.
The Tyne Catchment has 1258 consented discharge points (sewage treatment works, combined sewer overflows and private discharge points) spread throughout the Catchment. This represents an enormous impact on both the volume and quality of water flowing in our rivers and as such is one of the most significant uses of water in the Tyne Catchment. As seen recently in the Thames (River Wandle) where cleaning effluent was mistakenly discharged into the river there is still serious potential for environmental damage to occur resulting from treatment and release of sewage in the Tyne Catchment.
