Urban areas runoff

Attention, open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Urban areas account for 8% (216km²) of the Tyne Catchment. The majority of this land is concentrated at the vulnerable Estuary section of the river where stormwater runoff from roads, paved areas (including gardens), car parks and roofs frequently overwhelms the sewer system and leads to discharges of sewage and rain water mix from combined sewer overflows.

Rain water that has travelled over urban areas and sewage escaping from storm overflows both carry pollution that reduces the available oxygen in the river, contributing to the problems and annual death of fish and other organisms living in the estuary.
