Reporting Pollution

Attention, open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Pollution events can happen at anytime.  They can be long-term and continuous such as a leak from a septic tank or brief occurrences arising after spillage into the river.

One of the key key objectives for Tyne Rivers Trust is to reduce pollution; both by working to reduce the potential threat but also by reporting incidents as they occur in order to contain the pollution and trace the problem to its source where it can be corrected.  A large part of our work revolves around encouraging River Watchers to report pollutions and training volunteers in the River Fly Monitoring Initiative to collect data on invertebrates.

Whenever you come across a pollution incident please report it directly to the Environment Agency on 0800 807060.  They will ask you for the following information:

  1. Grid Reference or nearest postcode to the point of pollution
  2. Date and time that the pollution was observed
  3. Your full name and contact details so that they can keep you updated on progress.

You should always ask for an Incident No. so that you can track progress.

Due to the diverse variety in which pollution can reach our rivers not all reports can be confirmed as pollution events and not all confirmed cases will yield prosecutions - some will be dealt with out of court and for others there just may not be sufficient evidence to proceed.  But what remains constant is that the more cases that are reported the more opportunities there are to improve the Tyne River system to the benefit of wildlife, the fishery and people's enjoyment.
