Pollution
One of the greatest threats to any river system is the degradation of the quality of water through pollution. Much has been done to alleviate the historic problems experienced in the Tyne but now the challenge is how to address the important, but difficult to identify, smaller sources of pollution.
Water pollution generally originates from two sources; single points and widespread ‘seepage' or ‘diffuse' sources.
Some of the main identified sources of water pollution in the Tyne Catchment are outlined below.
