Make the name ‘Tyne’ recognised for its Catchment-wide environmental excellence

Historically the Tyne Catchment has suffered greatly from human activities resulting in polluted water, degraded habitat and loss of biodiversity. Past work to rectify the situation has focussed largely on specific issues and locations. This has had a huge impact, improving the river environment beyond all recognition. However, the challenges faced today are more subtle and widespread, necessitating a different approach. The Tyne Rivers Trust is working to improve the Tyne Catchment as a natural dynamic system, as an entire ecosystem, greater than the sum of its parts.

We believe that people are the greatest power for making, and sustaining, environmental improvements in a river catchment. Therefore, we seek to involve as many people as possible in our projects either directly or indirectly through education, awareness raising events and advertising. It is in this way that we hope the people of the Tyne Catchment will build a strong sense of stewardship that will ensure the Tyne continues to improve well into the future.

The Tyne Rivers Trust is a Company limited by guarantee (no. 5086888), registered in England and Wales, and is a Registered Charity (no. 1107358) set up in 2004. Our aims are:

  1. To conserve, protect, rehabilitate and improve the rivers, streams, watercourses and water impoundments of the River Tyne catchment including its estuary and adjacent coastal area.
  2. To advance the education of the public, or any association, company, local authority, administrative or governmental agency or public body or representative body in:-
    1. the understanding of rivers, river corridors and catchments, including their fauna, flora and economic or social activity, and river catchment management.
    2. the need for, and benefits of, conservation, protection, rehabilitation and improvement of aquatic environments.

In September 2006 we completed a wide-ranging public consultation designed to assess the needs of the Catchment and the expectations of those who live, work and use it. From this we published the first ever Strategic Action Plan for the Tyne Catchment in which we set out our Vision and Programmes of Work.
