One of our core aims is to use sound science to underpin and support our work and that of others in the catchment. It is our hope that we will develop the capacity to stimulate, fund and in some cases, carry out, research into catchment issues.

Trust Research

For example we are currently planning research into the
Socio-economic value of water-based recreation in the Tyne Catchment.

In 2010 Tyne Rivers Trust provided a placement for an MSc student from

Newcastle University to complete her project work and dissertation on the Water Framewok Directive.  A dry legal jargon-filled topic many of you may think but very valuable to a Rivers Trust like ourselves who can offer much of the solutions work but needs to be kept well informed and forearmed.  We also managed to support some practical work on the river bank with our student joining us to review the River Habitat Survey methodology with a view to creating an appropriate Rivers Trust habitat works version.

Ela also helped carry out chemical and biological monitoring of some Water Framework Directive water bodies.

One of the key objectives for Tyne Rivers Trust is the creation and initial support of sustainable River Watch groups throughout the catchment.  We have had some success already but towards achieving even more we are working with a PhD student from Durham University to apply the science of stakeholder engagement and public participation to the setting up of a River Watch group on the River Derwent.

The Trust also holds amount of Tyne-focused research carried out by others. research
