Spotting Sand Martins in comfort!

Attention, open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Malcolm Newson (our Director) ably assisted by his family has improved the view of a lovely section of the South Tyne on behalf of Newbrough Parish Council.  It was essential not to damage rootstock of the trees which help stabilise the river bank so our Director used a technique called pollarding to restore the view of the river cliff where Sand Martins nest.  Now the elderly residents of three villages can use the Lesley Newall memorial seat to observe the martins through their binoculars.  As part of the same improvement, NCC Footpaths Officer arranged for the path to the seat to be re-routed away from a severely eroding river bank, thanks to the generosity of farmer John Spence.  John also agreed to remove the pollarded material but meanwhile the younger Newsons have constructed an impressive traditional den (well above flood level!)  On a sunny April day our man-on-the-river-bank was able to inform at least a dozen passers-by about the practical works that the Trust undertakes and the purpose of riparian tree management.
