Harebell at Haydon Bridge

After 3 years of dedicated work by the Haydon Bridge River Watch Group harebells have grown back at the picnic site on the bank of the River South Tyne in the town and two flowers were spotted last week.

'I've always said that this is all the reward I would need' said a triumphant River Watch Champion, Barbara Wardle at the last 'Balsam Bashing' event of the season.  The group have worked consistently to remove the invasive plant from the area along side the picnic site and now they feel the hard work has really paid off.  A number of other native species have also been able to recolonise the stretch including common valerian, wild angelica, meadow sweet and watermint increasing the biodiversity and helping to strengthen the river bank.  But it's not over yet.  There's still plenty to tackle on the other bank and more monitoring to do.
