Work Experience with TRT
12 August 2011
6th Form students of Class 10 at Priory School, Hexham spent their summer term on work experience with Tyne Rivers Trust this year. The programme allowed the students to gain an insight into the work of the Trust, study the water cycle and river dynamics as well as contribute actively to delivering the objectives of TRT of managing and improving the Tyne catchment. The students completed work such as invasive species management, river clean and monitoring invertebrates in the water to gauge the health of the river.
At Allendale they visited the Phillips burn and old mine workings where they investigated the heritage of the rivers in this area. This is a River Fly site for the Trust where monitoring is regularly carried out to pick up pollution incidents. With domestic waste and road salt, this burn has its problems. The students discussed the historic use of the river and how it is affected by modern living before carrying out a river clean. They brough all the rubbish back to the class room to sort into types and recycle where appropriate.
The students also completed an invertebrate survey of their own at Dirt Pots on the East Allen. Many students found this session the most enjoyable and rewarding - not least because of the lovely weather. The students helped each othersample and count the invertebrate types and this data will help inform on the river bank works planned for autumn this year.
